TEXT
Fighting a very clever malaria mosquito.
Donald Dickerson , PMI advisor of the USAID Mission in Madagascar, knows what kind of illness he’ s trying to control.
“I was first diagnosed with malaria when I was working in Ghana. You get chills, your temperature goes up and down, and everything aches.” In Madagascar, he’s been combating the disease for almost three years now as he manages the Presidential Malaria Initiative (PMI).
The PMI program is an initiative of the American government which spreads over 17 countries in Africa. Madagascar was part of the third wave of countries and malaria program activities started here in 2007. (…)
Dickerson says that “we have four ways to fight Malaria: we use bed nets, indoor spraying, preventive treatment for pregnant women and prompt treatment of malaria cases. (…) But, there is a discussion among international health workers about our goals. Can we really eliminate malaria or should we just try to get it to the levels of a minor public health nuisance? I think if we can get the levels down, we can reduce the burden significantly.”
