TEXT  :           DEVELOPMENT IN THE THIRD WORLD

For far too many generations, uncounted millions of children have grown and many have died in subhuman poverty, hunger and malnutrition. This was almost accepted as a fact of life, a permanent state of affairs.

Many governments are now engaged in a variety of activities to provide community based services. For example : efforts towards comprehensive programmes for rural developments including food crops and water supply ; improving the position of women ; developing population policies ; attention to the environment and programmes in the field of human settlements. One important component of this new approach is Primary Health Care which, however, is not something new or untried. It is an approach based on the realities of the problems confronting us all and on experiences in many countries.

As far back as the 1960’s, governments in various parts of the world, with the cooperation of UNICEF and W.H.O began retraining traditional midwives and other villagers as part-time health workers. Likewise, several years ago, UNICEF began developing, in conjunction with a number of countries, kits containing the simple medecines required to treat the most common elements of each country. These kits assembled by UNICEF are distributed to village pharmacies and are resplenished through the contributions of the villagers.
